Privacy Policy

How StorageUnits.com collects, uses and protects your information.

1. Scope and the Companies Involved

This Privacy Policy applies to personal information we handle through www.storageunits.com, customer accounts, searches, inquiries, free reservations, contact forms, email, SMS, calls, support interactions, reviews, AI chat, and the photo-based space estimator (together, the “Services”).

Storage facilities displayed on StorageUnits.com are generally independent businesses. When you contact or reserve with one, we disclose relevant information to that facility so it can respond, confirm availability, and handle your rental. A facility may then process the information as an independent business under its own privacy policy. This Privacy Policy does not govern a facility's separate rental paperwork, payment processing, security cameras, or unrelated systems, nor does it govern third-party sites that you visit independently.

This is a consumer-facing policy. Separate notices may govern job applicants, employees, or other relationships if applicable.

2. Categories of Personal Information We Collect

The information we collect depends on how you use the Services. It can include:

  • Contact and account identifiers: name, telephone number, email address, mailing address if provided, usernames, password credentials in protected form, customer or account identifiers, and communication preferences.
  • Search and reservation details: city or ZIP code, requested unit size, storage type, desired move-in date, selected facilities, reservations and changes, confirmation identifiers, inquiry history, facility correspondence, and information about whether a reservation led to a move-in when reported by a facility or partner.
  • Customer communications: emails, texts, chat questions and responses, support requests, survey answers, call recordings and transcripts when lawfully recorded, and records of consent, opt-outs, and communications sent or received.
  • Uploaded photos and AI interactions: photos and other content you voluntarily provide to the Space Estimator, item descriptions or lists, estimates generated from those inputs, AI chat prompts and responses, user feedback on AI features, and limited technical information needed to troubleshoot and protect those systems. Photos can incidentally reveal people, addresses, possessions, documents, or other personal details.
  • Reviews and contributed content: review text, star ratings, photographs attached to reviews, the submitted name or display name, the facility reviewed, and evidence used to assess whether a customer actually rented from or interacted with a facility.
  • Device, internet, and activity information: IP address, browser and device characteristics, approximate location inferred from network data, referring URLs, search terms, pages viewed, clicks, session events, cookie identifiers, advertising identifiers, and data used for security, analytics, performance, and conversion measurement.
  • Advertising and attribution information: campaign sources, ad clicks, referral or click IDs, interactions across site visits, and information received from permitted advertising and analytics partners about whether an ad was associated with an inquiry, reservation, or reported move-in.
  • Location information: the place or ZIP code you search for and approximate location derived from your IP address. If we offer a feature that requests more precise location from your device, we will request applicable permissions before collecting it.
  • Privacy and compliance records: requests to access or delete information, identity-verification details needed to process such requests, preferences concerning targeted advertising, and records needed to demonstrate compliance or investigate misuse.

We do not currently use the Services to collect rental payments on a Facility's behalf. You may give payment information to a Facility under its separate process. We do not ask you to upload government ID numbers, payment card information, health records, or other highly sensitive information to the Space Estimator or AI chat. If such information appears incidentally in a photograph, message, or recording, we may nevertheless process it to provide the requested feature and handle it as required by law.

3. Sources of Information

We collect information directly from you when you create an account, submit a reservation, upload photos, communicate, opt into messages, or leave a review; automatically through our Services and technologies such as cookies, pixels, logs, and analytics tools; and from other sources such as participating Facilities, storage-inventory providers, review platforms, communications providers, fraud-prevention providers, advertising partners, and analytics services.

Facilities and partners may tell us whether an inquiry was accepted, a reservation was modified, a customer moved in, or a listing is available. Where permitted, we may connect that information with earlier searches or advertising interactions to operate the marketplace and measure performance.

4. Why We Use Personal Information

We may use the information described in this Policy to:

  • provide search results, estimates, account access, facility information, and reservation requests;
  • send a reservation to the selected Facility and facilitate confirmation, changes, customer support, and move-in reminders;
  • operate AI chat and the Space Estimator and generate responses or estimates you ask for;
  • process reviews, identify potentially fraudulent contributions, and display reviews with appropriate source or verification information;
  • answer questions, investigate service issues, resolve disputes, and keep records of customer interactions;
  • send service-related messages and, when authorized or otherwise lawful, promotional emails, texts, and calls;
  • personalize on-site results and content, maintain saved searches or accounts, and improve site usability;
  • measure website activity, ad effectiveness, reservation conversions, and reported move-ins, and perform permitted targeted advertising;
  • protect accounts and systems, detect spam or fraud, enforce our Terms, and comply with legal duties;
  • analyze performance, develop new features, and improve products, subject to the additional disclosures for photos and AI tools below; and
  • facilitate a corporate transaction, such as a merger, acquisition, financing, sale of assets, or restructuring, as permitted by law.

We may use aggregated or de-identified information for reporting and service improvements, subject to the requirements of applicable law. We will obtain consent when required for a particular use.

5. Who Receives Personal Information

We may disclose relevant categories of personal information to the following recipients for the purposes described above:

  • Participating storage facilities and inventory partners. When you select or contact a Facility, we share information such as your contact details, selected location, requested size, desired move-in date, reservation identifier, and messages necessary for that Facility to respond. We may receive updates in return. A Facility may independently contact you and may have its own privacy policy.
  • Technology and operational providers. Cloud hosting, database, cybersecurity, customer support, email and SMS delivery, phone systems, call recording and transcription, account management, analytics, AI model and image-processing providers, and vendors that maintain our Services. They receive information needed for their work and are subject to applicable arrangements and law.
  • Advertising, attribution, and measurement partners. Subject to your choices and applicable law, we may disclose cookie and device identifiers, IP addresses, campaign identifiers, website interaction events, and conversion information to providers that measure advertising or help display relevant ads. Some disclosures may qualify as “sale,” “sharing,” or targeted advertising under particular privacy laws, even without a conventional sale of customer contact lists.
  • Review platforms and other content partners. To display licensed third-party reviews and verify or syndicate content where permitted by the applicable sources, agreements, and law.
  • Professional advisers, corporate transaction parties, and legal recipients. Lawyers, auditors, insurers, potential transaction counterparties, courts, regulators, law enforcement, or other parties where reasonably necessary for business transactions, compliance, rights protection, or safety, subject to applicable law.
  • Other recipients at your direction. For example, when you ask us to connect you to a Facility or use a particular third-party integration.

We do not publish photos uploaded solely for a private space estimate as public reviews or advertisements merely because they were uploaded. If we want to use an identifiable estimator photograph for a different promotional purpose, we will request any permission required by law.

6. Independent Storage Facilities

When you submit a reservation, the applicable Facility needs customer and reservation details to contact you, confirm pricing and availability, arrange your visit, and enter into a rental agreement if you choose. After receiving your information, that Facility may act as an independent controller or business for its own rental, billing, marketing, security, and compliance activities.

StorageUnits.com does not control every subsequent use by a Facility. You should review the Facility's privacy practices and contact it directly about information held independently in its rental records. A request to delete information from StorageUnits.com does not automatically delete records the Facility must or may retain separately.

7. AI Chat and the Photo-Based Space Estimator

If you use our AI chat or Space Estimator, we process your submitted messages, photos, item descriptions, and related technical data to produce responses and storage-size suggestions. An AI or image-processing service provider may receive the necessary inputs or derived data to operate these tools. Outputs and usage records may also be used to detect errors, address abuse, support users, and evaluate quality as permitted by law.

Photos may include more than the furniture or boxes you intended to show. Before uploading, consider removing visible people, family photos, address labels, documents, license plates, credit cards, prescriptions, or other sensitive information. Do not upload another person's private material unless you have permission. You may choose not to upload photos and instead use any available manual estimating or browsing options.

AI tools can misidentify items or infer inaccurate sizes. The resulting estimate is not a professional inventory or a guaranteed measurement; see our Terms of Service for the full Space Estimator disclaimer.

8. Cookies, Analytics, and Advertising Technologies

We and our providers may use cookies, pixels, tags, local storage, server-side measurement, link identifiers, and comparable technologies for essential site functions, account sessions, security, preferences, analytics, ad attribution, remarketing, and advertising. For example, these technologies may help us measure whether a search or ad click led to a reservation or reported move-in.

Analytics and advertising providers may receive or place identifiers on your browser or device and may associate them with information they already hold, subject to applicable laws and privacy choices. Their independent processing is governed by their own applicable terms and policies. Depending on the tool configuration, we may also use session analytics or similar technologies; sensitive fields and photo uploads should be excluded from such capture wherever feasible.

You can manage cookies using your browser settings. Blocking some technologies may affect certain features. Where law requires consent before nonessential technologies operate, we will request it. Where law requires an opt-out from sale, sharing, or targeted advertising, we will provide the required method and honor qualifying browser-based opt-out preference signals, including Global Privacy Control where applicable.

9. Sale, Sharing, and Targeted Advertising

The legal meanings of “sale,” “sharing,” and “targeted advertising” differ by state. Our disclosure of browsing, device, campaign, and conversion information to certain advertising or measurement companies may be treated as a sale or sharing under an applicable law even when we receive no direct payment for that data. We may also use this information for cross-context behavioral advertising, depending on the tools enabled and your choices.

Where applicable law gives you the right to opt out of these practices, you can use the contact methods below. We will not knowingly sell or share the personal information of individuals under 16 in circumstances where the law prohibits doing so without the required affirmative authorization. We will honor legally required consent, opt-out, and preference-signal obligations. Disclosures needed to send your requested reservation to a Facility are distinct from unrelated targeted advertising.

10. SMS, Email, Calls, and Recording Choices

We may send reservation confirmations, reminders, account notices, service messages, and responses to your inquiries through the channels you provide, as permitted by applicable law. If you separately authorize marketing, we may also send promotions and offers through email, text messages, or calls using automated systems and, where lawfully consented to, artificial or prerecorded voices. Marketing consent is not required to make a free reservation.

To stop texts from a sender, reply STOP where supported; reply HELP for assistance. To stop marketing email, use the unsubscribe link or contact us. You may revoke consent for covered communications through any reasonable method recognized by applicable law. We maintain suppression or consent records as needed to honor requests. A Facility may communicate independently and may require a separate opt-out.

We may record, monitor, or transcribe calls and certain chats for quality assurance, assistance, training, dispute resolution, security, or documentation, only with notice and consent where required by law. Recordings and transcripts may be processed by our communications vendors and authorized personnel. Callers who do not agree to recording can request an available alternative communication channel.

11. Customer Accounts, Corrections, and Deletion

If you create an account, you may be able to access or update some profile information through your account. You can also request correction, access, or deletion by contacting [email protected]. We may need to verify that the request comes from you or an authorized agent. In some cases, we may retain records that are legally required, necessary to fulfill a pending reservation, needed to prevent fraud, or otherwise permitted by law.

Deleting your StorageUnits.com account may not remove records held independently by storage facilities or third-party services. We will explain applicable limitations when responding to a request, as required by law.

12. Retention and Disposal

We retain different categories of personal information for periods reasonably necessary for the reasons collected, taking account of the nature of the data, your relationship with us, operational requirements, legal obligations, security needs, and potential disputes. For example:

  • Account and reservation records: while the account or reservation relationship is active and for a reasonable period afterward for customer service, fraud prevention, reporting, and legal needs.
  • Calls, chats, and support history: for quality, follow-up, dispute resolution, security, and applicable legal periods.
  • Estimator photos and AI inputs: for the time needed to produce the estimate and for any additional retention that is disclosed for troubleshooting, abuse prevention, or quality control; vendor practices must be assessed and reflected in the final AI disclosure in Section 7.
  • Advertising and site event records: for relevant analytics, measurement, attribution, fraud prevention, and business reporting periods, subject to applicable privacy choices.
  • Marketing preferences and suppression information: as needed to respect opt-outs and document consent, even after marketing messages stop.

When information is no longer reasonably needed, we may delete, de-identify, or securely dispose of it in accordance with applicable law and operational procedures. Copies may remain temporarily in backups or records we must legally preserve.

13. Security

We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, misuse, alteration, and disclosure. Access may be restricted according to business need, and we may use authentication, logging, encryption, and vendor security controls as appropriate. However, no website, electronic transmission, or storage method can be guaranteed completely secure. Please use a strong password and notify us if you suspect unauthorized account activity. Where required, we will provide legally prescribed notices of relevant security incidents.

14. Children's Privacy

StorageUnits.com reservations and accounts are intended for people 18 or older, and our Services are not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13 without legally required authorization. If you believe a child has supplied personal information in violation of this policy, contact us so we can review and take appropriate action. Do not upload photographs of children unnecessarily when using the Space Estimator.

15. Your Privacy Rights and Choices

Depending on your state of residence and applicable law, you may have rights to request access to or a copy of personal information, correction, deletion, or information about our data practices; to opt out of sale, sharing, targeted advertising, or certain profiling; to limit some uses of sensitive information; and to appeal a denied request. We will provide the rights that legally apply to your circumstances.

Submit requests at [email protected]. We may verify your identity and, where permitted, ask for documentation of an agent's authority. We will respond within legally required periods and explain any lawful exception. We will not discriminate against you for exercising applicable privacy rights.

16. Additional Notice for California Residents

This section applies to California residents to the extent Storage Results Group, LLC is subject to the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended (CCPA). It supplements the sections above. • Internet or network activity: browsing history within our Services, clicks, cookies, ad interactions, device events, search behavior; collected automatically and from analytics and advertising services; used for site operation, measurement, safety, and targeted advertising where allowed; disclosed to technology and advertising partners.
  • Approximate geolocation: inferred location, searched geographic areas; collected from network signals and user searches; used for local listings, analytics, and fraud prevention; disclosed where needed to providers and Facilities for requested services.
  • Audio, electronic, and visual information: customer support recordings and transcripts, reviews, uploaded photos, chat prompts, and AI outputs; collected from users and communications systems; used for service delivery, reviews, support, and AI features; disclosed to relevant service providers and, for material intentionally made public, displayed to site visitors.

Our principal sources are you, your device, independent Facilities, inventory feeds, review providers, and service or advertising partners. Business purposes include providing the marketplace, support, security, analytics, advertising, compliance, and the AI features described above. We may disclose these categories for business purposes to Facilities, technology vendors, support services, professional advisers, and other recipients described in Section 5.

Sale or sharing. Depending on actual adtech configurations, identifiers, internet activity, approximate location, and inferences may be disclosed for cross-context behavioral advertising in ways that constitute “sharing” or “sale” under California law. We do not knowingly sell or share personal information of consumers under 16 without the legally required authorization.

California rights. Subject to exceptions, eligible California residents may request to know or access personal information and related disclosures; request correction or deletion; opt out of sale or sharing; limit certain uses of sensitive personal information where applicable; and avoid discrimination for exercising those rights. Use [email protected]. We honor applicable opt-out preference signals such as Global Privacy Control when required. You may use an authorized agent under procedures allowed by law.

Retention. The criteria for retaining each category are stated in Section 12; any additional specific retention disclosures required by law will be published here or in a linked retention schedule.

17. Transfers and Business Changes

Our vendors and systems may process information in the United States and, where relevant, other countries. Local privacy protections can differ, and we use safeguards required by applicable law. If we reorganize, merge, seek financing, or sell business assets, personal information may be disclosed or transferred as legally permitted, subject to required notices and protections.

18. Changes to This Policy

We may revise this Policy as our Services, technologies, vendors, or legal obligations change. The current version will be available on StorageUnits.com with its updated date. We will provide additional notice or request consent when required by law. Material changes will apply as permitted by applicable law.
